Simply Music® is a remarkable, Australian-developed piano and keyboard program that has beginning students playing great-sounding pop, blues, classical and accompaniment pieces - immediately - from their very first lessons.
Traditional lessons, for the most part, require that students first learn to read music as the means of learning how to play. This ‘read first, play later’ approach is slow and frustrating, and far too many students never acquire the ability to play. In fact, many lose their desire to learn altogether.
Here’s what people have to say about Simply Music Charlotte with Jim Patten, Accredited Simply Music Teacher…
My 11-year-old son has been taking music lessons from Jim Patten since January ’08. His experience with the Simply Music Program has been simply incredible! When asked why he likes it, he says, “... because it’s so easy to learn songs… you can learn them in one week, no one hour!” He absolutely loves to play the new pieces he learns each week, as well as earlier pieces, and everything is easily memorized because of how it’s presented in class. Mr. Patten teaches the students to see and hear patterns in the music and play variations of the foundation songs, which include classical as well as jazz pieces. After just one lesson, my son and his classmates were playing with both hands. Now they play chords and jazzy runs and rhythms, they use the pedal and proudly make up their own variations of the songs, all without having to worry about reading notes. When they do begin learning the notes, they’ll have a strong base of songs that they’ll already know by heart to support this learning. I used to teach traditional piano lessons and if I were to do it again, I’d go the Simply Music route because it just makes sense and it is so quickly rewarding for the students. We truly couldn’t be more pleased with Jim Patten and the Simply Music approach to teaching piano!
I can't tell you how grateful I am to have found this wonderfully innovative method of teaching piano! Simply Music has given both my son and me the instant success that motivates us to continue playing the piano. My son was somewhat reluctant to learn the piano, but what a boost to his confidence to find that after the first lesson, he was actually playing real music! For myself, I feel that for the first time I'm actually starting to understand how music is created, and it's surprisingly simple! I've struggled for years with traditional piano methods and my progress has been painstakingly slow. It's a joy to have music in the house and to finally be using our piano the way it was intended. I must say, my husband is also delighted that our piano practicing consists of real music instead of repetitive chords and scales etc.
The added plus to Simply Music is having such a wonderful teacher. It's obvious that you love teaching music Jim, and your enthusiasm is infectious!
To whom it may concern:
I want to express my total happiness with the Simply Music program and especially our music coach Jim Patten. My son Chase is most fond of him as his coach and I'm certain that this is the largest reason that Chase is still motivated in learning piano. The relationship, which is built between the instructor, teacher or coach, is of the most important with any learning situation, and this "student-coach" relationship between Chase and Jim is remarkable. As Jim also touches on many things for what to expect when learning something new and prepares Chase (and me!) for the ups and downs with the interest level and much more!
I was referred to Jim and the Simply Music program through a friend, and I'm so impressed with the different technique used for teaching piano. Unlike the traditional method of learning to play, this keeps Chase motivated and proud since he learns a new song each week. It builds his confidence and makes him want to learn more and more! He looks forward to what will be next! We are now beginning foundation #2 and building upon what Chase has already learned. I'm most excited about the fact that Chase will always have this in his memory for the rest of his life! What an amazing gift! Even if he were to never take another lesson (which will not happen!).. he will always have this! He can sit down at any piano and just play the most amazing songs, and only after three months!
I had always wanted to get lessons for Chase, but I'm so happy that I waited and was lucky to have this opportunity as a first experience for Chase because if he had started with the traditional way of learning piano, I feel so certain that Chase would not have had the interest level that he now has, and possibly would not want to try another program. A child needs to "want" to learn, and with this program and Jim's personality and way of instruction makes for the perfect combination that works! I highly recommend both - the program, and Jim Patten as the coach. A truly rewarding experience, which will never be forgotten.
I know I've sent info on piano lessons before... I did that back when I was trying to get the class going and before I even had the chance to have my 7 y.o. daughter start taking Simply Music lessons. We had done a couple months of traditional piano lessons, and my daughter had made appropriate progress. She loved her teacher, but the approach was slow. After two months, she could read a few notes but could only play a few bars of music by using her book.
Now that my daughter has been taking Simply Music lessons, I just can't believe what she and the other students in her class are able to play. Right from the beginning, they've been learning a new song every week. Within the first month, they were playing two handed SONGS--not just a few bars. By the end of the second month, they were playing two sections of "Carol of the Bells"--among other things. And it just keeps getting better! Last week they added "Ode to Joy". Oh, and did I mention, they usually learn each song within the lesson it is presented, so they can play it from memory perfectly within just a few days. Honest, they really can!
My daughter loves the class and loves to practice. I actually have to call her away from the piano to do other tasks. She's in a small class of 3 students. They encourage each other and are becoming good friends.
Since I've seen the results of several months of both the "traditional" and the Simply Music teaching approaches, I can honestly say that the Simply Music lessons are worth every penny. You "simply" won't believe how easily your child will learn to play the piano with Simply Music! I didn't!
So, if you have any inclination that you want your son or daughter to learn piano, I absolutely recommend that you check out Simply Music with Jim Patten. He's a fantastic teacher and will do info sessions for anyone on an individual basis. He currently has timeslots open on Mondays at A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church in Charlotte (near Growing Scholars north). He can start a class whenever he has enough students. You can e-mail Jim at email@example.com or call him at 704-657-5839. You are welcome to tell him I encouraged you to contact him if you like.

My sons have been taking lessons with this program since last September. When they started they were 11 & 6. I have to be honest, they had no desire to take lessons or learn piano. Mom and Dad were making them. Since then they have learned a bunch of songs and are really enjoying making music. My oldest son broke his wrist 2 weeks ago and is so disappointed that he can only play one handed AND will have to miss his recital. What a change in attitude!
I just wanted to let you know how much we are enjoying Simply Music. This has given Christopher and me a chance to do something together that we both enjoy. Being one of 5 children, he really needed something to call "his own" and I am so pleased with the philosophy behind your instruction. As a homeschooling mom, I am always looking for ways to teach my children using methods that meet their individual needs. I have already gleaned many ideas for meeting Christopher's kinesthetic learning style needs from your methods of working with him. In fact, several of our children can play some of the songs already!! To top it off, my 14 year old who plays the guitar came into the room yesterday and played the guitar along with Christopher as he was practicing!! This brought a big smile to my face.
Again, thanks for all you do!!
